The Hopi Tribe Disappointed in Navajo Nation
Kykotsmovi, AZ - The Hopi Tribe is disappointed that the Navajo Nation
opposes the Accommodation Agreement. "It seems they want to have it both
ways," said Hopi Tribal Chairman Ferrell Secakuku.
"The settlement was determined in December 1995 and the Navajo people and
the Nation have had 18 months to consider the Accommodation Agreement. This
also includes an extension which the Hopi Tutsqua (Land) Team requested from
the Hopi Tribal Council extending the timeline to March 31, 1997."
"The Hopi Tribe has always worked in good faith in providing information the
Navajo families' need to make an informed decision."
"It is unfortunate that there are people who do not want to accept all the
efforts of a settlement. This has lead to people being misinformed. It is
an unfortunate circumstance for these Navajo families."
The Hopi Tribe has always clearly stated their position. The Hopi Tribe, on
behalf of the Hopi people, is only acting to regain jurisdiction of Hopi
Land. The real issue is reclaiming the land restored to the Hopi people in
the 1974 Land Settlement Act.
