Fort Sill Chiricahua/Warm Spring Apache leader Mildred I. Cleghorn, of
Apache, Oklahoma, died early Tuesday morning (April 15) in a car accident
not far from her home. She was driving her great-grandson to school when
her car was hit broadside on the passenger's side by another vehicle. She
died instantly. The boy had missed the school bus so she put him in the
back seat of her car, instructed him to buckle his seat belt, and drove
away from her home. In the accident, he suffered a broken leg. The
driver of the other vehicle sustained only minor injuries.
Services will be held at the Reformed Church of Apache, Oklahoma at 7
p.m. on Thursday, April 17 and then at the Fort Sill Chiricahua/Warm
Springs Apache Tribal Complex in Apache, OK at 10 a.m. on Friday, April
18. Burial will follow at the Apache Prisoner of War Cemetery at Fort
Sill.
Mildred was born an Apache prisoner of war on December 11, 1910.
No one will ever take her place.
