1st Annual American Indian Studies Summer Institute
Please mark your calendars. An American Indian Studies workshop
will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus June 17-19,
1997. On June 16, a pre-conference training session on _Classroom
Activities on Wisconsin Indian Treaties and Tribal Sovereignty_ will be
available for those who have not previously attended a DPI workshop on
this award-winning resource. Sponsored by the American Indian Studies
Program at the Department of Public Instruction, the Ho-Chunk Nation
Department of Education, and the UWEC Wisconsin Indian History, Culture,
and Tribal Sovereignty Project. Hosts will be J P Leary, American Indian
Studies Consultant, DPI; Cheryl Two Bears, Executive Director of
Education, Ho-Chunk Nation; and Dr. Ronald N. Satz, Dean, College of
Professional Studies, UWEC. Featured presenters include Alan Caldwell,
Principal, Menominee Tribal School.
WHY? To increase understanding of issues central to the field of American
Indian Studies. To improve implementation of Wisconsin's American Indian
Studies statutes (Act 31). To build capacity by training a core group of
educators to be able to serve as a local first point of contact. To
provide professional development opportunities designed to improve teaching
and learning in the field of American Indian Studies.
WHO should attend? Those dealing with American Indian Studies or involved
with the education of American Indian students, including teachers,
curriculum specialists, media specialists, administrators, and all others
with a personal or professional interest in American Indian Studies and/or
American Indian education. Education students and those applying for
Wisconsin teaching licenses are also encouraged to attend.
Activities will include a thorough training in Wisconsin's American Indian
Studies statutes, a visit to the Ho-Chunk Nation tribal complex in Black
River Falls, and concurrent sessions with participants and guest speakers
sharing resources and best practices, and discussing model programs. A
brochure containing final details will be coming out soon.
Participants can receive DPI clock hours, or for an additional fee, can
elect to receive undergraduate or graduate credit from UW-Eau Claire
Extension. Registration cost is $125, $165 with pre-conference
registration as well.

State law requires schools to provide instruction in the history culture,
and tribal sovereignty of the eleven federally-recognized tribes and bands
in the state at least twice in K-8 and once in high school. For more
