Teesto, AZ-Clayton Honyumptewa, Office of Hopi Lands Director and Robbie
Honanie, Range Management Director received plaques of appreciation from
Navajo Teesto Chapter House President, David Begay, Sr. The two Hopi men
were recognized for contributions made during the emergency relief efforts
in January when record snowfall on Hopi land prompted Chairman Secakuku
to declare a State of Emergency.
Honyumptewa acknowledged the team work involved in the relief
efforts saying, "These plaques are not just for us but for all the
departments and agencies who assisted during this time." He cited the
Hopi Tribal Emergency Medical Services, Office of Hopi Lands, Property &
Dismantling Crews, Range Management, Sanitation & Facilities Construction,
Hopi Rangers, as well as the Hopi Police Department, Land Operations, Road
Crews and Facility Management of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Other
agencies also contributing were the Arizona Food Bank, Army National
Guard, Peabody Coal and the U.S. Forest Services. Local grocery stores
which include Bashas, Kykotsmovi Village Store and McGees also
contributed.
Teesto Chapter House President, David Begay, Sr., commended the
Hopi men on the measures taken to ensure their safety and welfare during
the snow storm which left the Hopi reservation in virtual isolation.
Honanie said, "I'm surprised but I'm glad that they recognized
our efforts."
Honyumptewa commented, "We have always served the Navajo people in
times of need. This shows that we're willing to work with the Navajo
people. Hopefully, we will both be good neighbors."
