Kykotsmovi, Ariz.-The Hopi Tribal Council passed a resolution authorizing
the Hopi Tribe to enter into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service. The cooperative agreement will include a review of
the Golden Eagle Population Survey Research Protocol and conduct a
population survey on the Hopi reservation in 1997.
The regional golden eagle population survey will include the Hopi
and Navajo reservations. The Navajo Tribe is already conducting their own
surveys and it is important that Hopi survey data is included with the
U.S.F.W.S. findings to ensure that protected. This would include the
development and implementation of a culturally sensitive wildlife
management plan; establish linkages and coordinate wildlife management
services among tribal programs and with other agencies (i.e. Federal,
State, Tribes, etc.); consult and work cooperatively with clan leaders to
protect eagle nesting sites and establish protective buffer zones.
The Hopi Tribal Council is entrusted with the responsibility to
protect and preserve the good things of Hopi life, to protect the free
exercise of religion and maintain its natural and wildlife resources for
the benefit of future Hopi generations.
It is also the desire of the Hopi Tribe to maintain a balance in
the findings of the study and to further involved the villages in these
issues.
A meeting which was held in Kykotsmovi last week involved the
input of several cultural advisors and clan representatives.
