[ I regret the delay of a month in relaying this article. I wanted to
find a reference to other articles in the NATIVE-L archives that might
provide background on this subject for anyone who is interested. I
have just scanned the NATIVE-L archives and produced an index to all
articles containing mention of Taiwan. That index can be found at
"http://bioc09.uthscsa.edu/natnet/archive/nl/taiwan.html" I'll list a
few particularly good background pieces at the end of this article.

Do you know there are aboriginal people in Taiwan??? There are
only 2% of them in the total population. They have lived in Taiwan for
more than 4000 years. And the colonial history of Taiwan started since
400 years ago.

Taroko, one of the ten tribes, recently found that their land was
stolen!!! More than 20 years ago, Asian Concrete Company "rented"
Taroko's reservation for mining concrete. Taroko had not gotten any
subsidy or money from the company. When the 20-year lease was over, the
people wanted to go back to the mountain to grow crops. They found that
the land no longer belongs to them. Their land had been stolen by the
majoriy Han people. The public office in charge of administration of the
village counterfeited documents renoucing the ownership of the land.

Taroko wanted to sue the company. However, the lawyer told them
it's too late. Because it has passed the limitation for tracing back (20
years).
