The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT
intervention in the following situation in Guatemala.
Brief description of the situation :
The National Indigenous and Peasant Co-ordinating Body of Guatemala
("Coordinadora Nacional Ind?gena y Campesina de Guatemala-CONIC)
expressed to CODEHUCA, a member of the network, its concern over the
assassination of Ms FRANCISCA PEREZ ESTEBAN at her home located in the
Commune of La Blanca Oc?s, San Marco on the 12th of this month.
According to the CONIC, the inhabitants of La Blanca suspect that the
crime was committed by the landholders with the support of the
military and that for a long time the State has faced this problem
without finding any solution.
Action requested :
Please write to the Guatemalan authorities urging them to:
i. carry out a thorough and impartial investigation into the
assassination of Ms FRANCISCA PEREZ ESTEBAN in order to identify those
responsible, bring them to justice and impose upon them the penal,
civil and/or administrative sanctions provided by law;
ii. ensure the right of the victim's family to adequate compensation
and reparation;
iii. put an end to violence and other grave violations perpetrated
against the indigenous population;
iv. guarantee the full respect of human rights and fundamental
freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and
international standards;
