THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS REORGANIZATION ACT has been reintroduced in
the Senate by Sen. McCain as S. 545

A Quote from Sen. McCain's introductory remarks:

"It is long past time to change the way this Nation deals with American
Indians. It is time to break down the barriers to true tribal
self-governance and self-determination by providing Indian tribes the
authority to design both the structure and function of their trustee,
the Bureau of Indian Affairs."

Sen McCain also re-introduced his Amendments to the ICWA, now S.569.
There is now both a House and a Senate version of this legislation
introduced, altho no hearings are currently scheduled (as of Friday,
4/2/97).

later today. Summaries today or tomorrow (assuming my internet
connection holds out - it often goes down in the rain. Having a provider
with a name like "rust.net" ... well, you get it.)

An number of other bills turned up on the "word search" for the words
"Indian" and "tribe" - will investigate them further before posting
notice here and adding them to the site.
