Heiltsuk Hereditary Chiefs demand trespassers leave King Island

Bella Bella, June 20, 1997

Heiltsuk Hereditary Chiefs are demanding that environmentalists and
members of the Nuxalk leave King Island (Yisdaitxv Territory)
immediately. At 1 PM (PST) on Saturday June 21, 1997 an entourage of
gillnet fishing boats loaded with Heiltsuk Hereditary Chiefs and
supporters will make their way out to King Island and demand that the
trespassers leave. Heiltsuk will erect signs that read "You are now in
Heiltsuk Traditional Territory." Head Chief Woyala, Reg Moody says "our
Hereditary Chiefs will no longer sit back and allow environmentalists
and others to trespass on Heiltsuk Traditional Territory".

Moody says, "We have told the Nuxalk that we are prepared to sit down
and talk about the concerns they may have with the Yisdaitxv Territory.
Our ancestors have recorded this information that states whats known as
King Island is part of Traditional Heiltsuk Territory. We must ensure
that future generations know where they come from and the history of
this territory."
