Final Update (ENGLISH) - July 15, 1997

1. Advance Team in Chiapas

Internationalists, Mexicans and Indigenous are now working together in
Chiapas to make final preparations for construction volunteers to enter the
Zapatista civilian community center of Oventic Aguascalientes II on July
20, 1997.

2. Construction Teams Ready

Individual volunteers are traveling, or preparing to travel from far and
wide, to participate in the construction of the first autonomous,
indigenous Junior High School in Chiapas. Please keep us in your hearts,
your minds, and your prayers.

3. Chiapas Military Situation

The Mexican army continues to wage war against the indigenous communities
of Chiapas. More army bases and outposts are being built, military patrols
disrupt daily life, and the government has not honored the negotiated peace
agreements. The peace talks are still suspended.

We trust that the Junior High School at Oventic Aguascalientes II will
become a small part of the international effort to find peace with justice
and dignity in Chiapas.

4. Mayan Internet Messages

The Junior High School at Oventic Aguascalientes II will have a computer
lab (small) and the students will be able to carry disks into a nearby town
and send email messages. Again we hope these messages will generate
understanding and the conditions for a just and dignified peace in Chiapas.

Teachers and students are particularly urged to join us in this worldwide
exchange via the internet. To receive messages from the Junior High School
send the following message to <mexicopeace@igc.apc.org>:

<subscribe mayan pen pals>

5. Donations

Costs for the creating this unique school are very high. Please send
checks made out to Grass Roots Events, INC to Chiapas School Construction
Teams at 3909 Centre Street #B, San Diego, CA 92103.
