_________________________________

The late William Henry "Lone Star" Dietz, Rosebud Sioux will be
posthumously inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame August 23, 1997 in
a ceremony at the Harrisburg Hilton, Harrisburg, PA. Dietz was
assistant coach at the Carlisle Indian School, and a member of the great
1911 football team. He was blocker for the legendary Jim Thorpe and
defensive tackle who played 60 minutes of every game from 1909-1912.

Dietz coached the Washington State Agricultural College to a 14-0 win
over national power Brown University in the first RoseBowl game, January
1, 1916. He assisted Glen "Pop" Warner at Stanford to 2 Rose Bowl wins
1925-1927. As assistnat to Warner and freshman coach at Temple
University, his 2-year record was 16-0-1. A consultant to Knute Rockne
and many other famous coaches, he was tagged "the coaches coach" by
Damon Runyan. Dietz became head football coach for Albright College in
1937 and despite only 3 players from the previous year, had an
undefeated season with 1 tie to Ursinus, becoming the first undefeated
team in Albright's 53 year history. He coached University of Wyoming
and the Boston "Redskins" (1933-1934), the forerunner of the Washington
Redskins.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Lonestar Dietz was
well-known among his peers as an artist. Married to Winnebago artist,
Angel DeCora, he was hired as an art teacher at the Carlisle school in
the early 1900's. His cover and logo art in the school magazines
brought him national recognition.

Ceremonies for the induction at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers include
a morning brunch ($15) and an evening ceremony followed by a dinner
($35). For contact information, email Barbara Landis, landis@epix.net.
