TWO FULL-TIME TENURE TRACK POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Humboldt State University received a grant from the W. K. Kellogg
Foundation to fund the American Indian Civics Project, the goal of which is
to initiate systemic change in the teaching of state-mandated U.S. History
and Institutions courses. The University is seeking to add faculty members
to the Native American Studies Department who would be able to contribute
to this project as well as to the general curriculum in Native American
Studies. These positions will be permanent tenure track University positions.

Area of Instruction: Native American Studies. Two positions available.
HSU will consider applications from qualified candidates in any field of
NAS, including history, social science, political science, literature,
humanities, law, or tribal governance. But one position must be filled
with someone who has the credentials and expertise to teach and develop
courses that cover the concepts of Native American citizenship and civics,
including American Indian tribal sovereignty, Native American dual
citizenship, Tribal governance, Tribal governments relationships to the
United States government, and Tribal members obligations to their Tribal
nation. The other position must have coursework or teaching experience
applicable to NAS in one of the academic fields mentioned above.

Rank and Salary: Rank and salary are dependent upon the appointee's
qualifications and experience. A copy of the current California State
University Salary Structure will be sent to you upon request.

Professional Qualifications: Required: (1) A doctoral degree or
equivalent, will consider ABD, from an accredited institution, preferably
in Native American Studies, History, Literature, or an allied field, with a
dissertation on a topic in history, ethnohistory, literature, or general
humanities that is directly applicable to Native American studies. (2)
Demonstrated ability to teach in Native American Studies or related areas
at the post-secondary level and evidence of scholarly accomplishment and/or
promise. (3) Demonstrated experience with Indian tribes and groups. The
candidate must have a demonstrated interest and ability to teach a broad
range of courses to diverse students (majors, general education students,
etc.). Candidates whose characteristics and qualifications also suit them
to prepare individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse
society are especially encouraged to apply.

Professional Duties: 12 semester units of teaching and 3 additional units
of normal ancillary duties in the Native American Studies program
(advising, committee work, etc.). For the duration of the Kellogg
Foundation Grant, reduction in teaching responsibilities will be available
for curriculum development, possible administrative duties, and other
duties connected with the American Indian Civics Project.
