Washington State University Hosting Native American "Pah-Loots-Pu
Celebration," April 8-9

PULLMAN Wash. -- The 25th annual Pah-Loots-Pu Celebration, with
entertaining and colorful traditional drum and dance contests, is
scheduled for April 8 and 9 at Washington State University's Beasley
Performing Arts Coliseum.

The celebration, hosted by WSU's Native American Student Center, is
free and open to the public. Grand entry is tentatively scheduled for
Saturday and Sunday at noon. A traditional dinner is scheduled for 5
p.m. Saturday. The dinner is free for all participants and tickets will
be on sale for non-participants.

The two-day event will include dance specials and a golf tournament
at the University of Idaho Golf Course. The dance specials include
a drum contest sponsored by the Pah-Loots-Pu queen; a women's jingle
and tiny-tot sponsored by head woman Jackie McArthur of Lapwai, Idaho;
a Prairie Chicken special sponsored by Leon Stewart; and a Ku-Au-Mah
Alumnae special sponsored by the Freidlander-Vallee family.

The 1999-2000 Pah-Loots-Pu queen, Dawn DePoe of Redmond, will also pass
her crown to a new winner during the celebration.

The master of ceremonies is Dale Oldhorn and the headman is Leon
"Old Elk" Stewart, both from Crow Agency, Mont. The arena director
is Peter Jo Olrney of White Swan. The host drum is Young Greyhorse,
Browning, Mont. The invited drums are Lightening Creek from Lapwai,
Idaho; Black Lodge from White Swan; Black Whistle from Lodge Grass,
Mont.; and Mandaree from New Town, N.D.

The host hotel for the event is the Mark IV in Moscow, Idaho.
